Outside Humboldt County

So you're not lucky enough to live in Humboldt County, eh? Well that's OK!

We strongly believe in the philosophy of "think global, act local."

Chances are that like Humboldt County, your community is a wonderful place, worthy of protection against corporate rule run rampant. We work to support local democracy everywhere because we know that only through strong local communities can we defend our planet and the well-being of the people, animals and ecosystems that live here. Let's work together to assert community rights across the nation!

When you explore our website you'll quickly see that we're involved in lots of aspects of our community. But our focus isn't solely local. Our mission is to help make Humboldt County a model for other communities -- and to follow the example of other democracy pioneers around the world by putting into practice models that are working elsewhere.

If you're doing something exciting in your hometown, please tell us about it!

We hope you find our local work inspiring, feel free to contact us to find out more about any of our local projects and to start a conversation about how they might work where you live.

We have two email newsletters, one for folks in Humboldt County, and one for folks who are not. If you're not getting them already, please sign up for our monthly newsletter.

Here are some parts of our website that can be helpful to anyone, wherever you live:

Learn about our teaching philosophy and our workshops. Find information about how we work with groups and communities to build custom-designed workshops to tackle real-world problems and facilitate democratic change.

★ The Move to Amend campaign is a national coalition co-founded by Democracy Unlimited. We're working with organizations and groups across the country to call for an amendment to the US Constitution to Abolish Corporate Personhood and assert local democracy protections for people and communities. You can link up with this effort through Democracy Unlimited's Move to Amend Network, or through the campaign website.

Our Theory of Social Change can be helpful for thinking about any kind of organizing and how it fits into the bigger picture of systemic social change. We've found it particularly helpful in breaking down "issue silos" and helping build meaningful coalitions that recognize all the pieces necessary to build movements.

★ If you want to sharpen your organizing skills and experience, consider applying for our Internship Program. We welcome applicants of all ages and backgrounds. The goal of the program is to help build your experience and confidence to take back to your community.

Our Deep Democracy Retreat and Organizer Training is an intensive, in-depth workshop to help you envision grassroots democratic solutions to problems facing your community. Legal history, case studies, and forward-looking strategies are offered to inspire your action plan. People travel from all over the country to attend!
